Accompanied by teachers Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Traugott, our students had a magical evening together at this formal event for individuals with disabilities. This evening couldn't have been possible without the support and teamwork within our D87 family and beyond. 🌟 Black History Month Spotlight at BHS 📚✊ February is Black History Month, and Mrs. Findley's African American History class is reading "Up from Slavery" by Booker T. Washington. 📖 Local history - BHS's own Crystal Curry shared the story of her father, Dewitt Taylor, who was a baker recruited from Fairfield, Alabama to come up to Thompson's Bakery in the 1950s. She shared that he was once arrested at a restaurant in Louisville for refusing to leave the segregated lunch counter. Once in Bloomington, Mr. Taylor worked at the bakery and was also the first Black man hired at the McDonald's on Main Street, and he made the sausage for Garcia's Pizza back in the day! This brought history to life in a vivid way for Mrs. Findley's students! #BlackHistoryMonth #LocalHistory #Inspiring #WeAreD87 🌟 El Mes de la Historia Afroamericana en la escuela BHS 📚✊ Febrero es el mes de la Historia Afroamericana, y la clase de Historia de la Señora Findley está leyendo el libro "Up from Slavery" del autor Booker T. As students and staff celebrated this milestone day, Miss Killian's kindergarten class at Washington was in for an extra special surprise. They FaceTimed with Miss Killian’s 100-year-old grandfather, Papa Marvin Bower! And the cherry on top?
